The curriculum focuses on core subjects like languages (Sinhala/Tamil/English), mathematics, science, history, and religion, with national examinations playing a pivotal role in student progression and higher education placement.
Syllabus books (textbooks) serve as the cornerstone of this system. Developed by the Educational Publications Department (Edupub) under the Ministry of Education, these books strictly align with the national syllabus. They ensure uniformity in content delivery across diverse regions, from urban Colombo to rural areas. Textbooks provide standardized, age-appropriate knowledge, exercises, activities, and assessments that guide both teachers and students.
They promote equity by being distributed free of charge, reducing financial burdens on families. Syllabus books integrate cultural, historical, and civic values while supporting skill development. In a system where exams determine futures, they act as the primary resource for preparation, minimizing reliance on expensive private tuition. However, challenges like outdated content in some areas and the need for digital adaptation persist. Overall, these books maintain quality, consistency, and accessibility, forming the backbone of Sri Lanka’s commitment to inclusive education.
