Batticaloa Teaching Hospital stands as the premier government healthcare institution and the only teaching hospital in Sri Lankaβs Eastern Province. Located on approximately 7.9 hectares of land in the Manmunai North Divisional Secretariat area, it serves as a vital tertiary care center for the people of Batticaloa and surrounding districts.
History and Development
Originally functioning as a general hospital, it was upgraded to Teaching Hospital status on November 17, 2006, to support medical education for students of the Faculty of Healthcare Sciences at Eastern University of Sri Lanka. The hospital has grown significantly over the decades, especially in the post-conflict era, expanding its infrastructure and specialties. Today, it boasts around 900 beds and provides comprehensive medical services to a large population.
Facilities and Services
The hospital offers a wide range of services including a 24-hour emergency department, general medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, cardiology, oncology, and various subspecialties. Recent developments include a new Early Cancer Detection Center, a modern Cardiology Unit, and a Surgical Unit supported by international grants, which have significantly improved surgical capacity and reduced waiting lists.
As a teaching institution, it plays a crucial role in training future doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals while delivering quality patient care. It features advanced diagnostic facilities, intensive care units, and outpatient departments that handle thousands of patients daily. The hospital continues to upgrade its infrastructure to meet growing healthcare demands in the region.
